Piceid: the molecule behind resveratrol's shadow
Polydatin was never hiding — it was standing next to its famous aglycone the whole time. This is the credited record: who found it, who named it, who measured it, and why the field now studies it as resveratrol's delivery-minded relative.
1939Michio Takaoka isolates resveratrol
In the Journal of the Chemical Society of Japan, Michio Takaoka reports a new phenolic compound from white hellebore (Veratrum grandiflorum) — the first isolation of resveratrol, the stilbene whose glucoside is piceid.
Takaoka M., J. Chem. Soc. Japan 60, 1090 (1939)
1963Nonomura, Kanagawa & Makimoto — resveratrol in knotweed
Japanese researchers report resveratrol among the chemical constituents of Polygonum cuspidatum roots (Ko-jo-kon) — the plant that will later become the industrial source of the whole stilbene family, piceid included.
Nonomura S., Kanagawa H., Makimoto A., Yakugaku Zasshi 83, 988 (1963)
1976Aritomi & Donnelly — "piceid" gets its name
Characterizing stilbene glucosides in the bark of the Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), Aritomi and Donnelly give the resveratrol glucoside the name that sticks: piceid, after the spruce genus. The same molecule carries a second name from knotweed chemistry: polydatin.
Aritomi M., Donnelly D.M.X., Phytochemistry 15, 2006 (1976)
1995Lamuela-Raventós et al. — piceid isomers in wine
A Barcelona group develops direct HPLC analysis of cis- and trans-resveratrol and the piceid isomers in Spanish red wines — the analytical basis for everything later said about stilbenes in the glass.
Lamuela-Raventós R.M. et al., J. Agric. Food Chem. 43, 281 (1995) — doi:10.1021/jf00050a003
1997Jang et al. — resveratrol's Science moment
Jang, Cai, Udeani and colleagues at the University of Illinois report cancer chemopreventive activity of resveratrol in cell and mouse models — the paper that turned an obscure phytoalexin into a global research industry, and dragged piceid into the spotlight with it.
Jang M. et al., Science 275, 218 (1997) · PMID 8985016
1998Cichewicz & Kouzi — a bacterium runs the reaction
The soil bacterium Bacillus cereus is shown to glycosylate resveratrol into piceid — nature demonstrating, in both directions, that the glucose cap is a switch organisms flip on purpose.
Cichewicz R.H., Kouzi S.A., J. Natural Products 61, 1313 (1998)
1999Romero-Pérez et al. — the major derivative in grape juice
"Piceid, the Major Resveratrol Derivative in Grape Juices" — the title says it. In the world's most famous resveratrol source, the capped form dominates the free one.
Romero-Pérez A.I. et al., J. Agric. Food Chem. 47, 1533 (1999) · PMID 10564012
2004Walle et al. — the bioavailability reckoning
Thomas Walle's group gives humans oral resveratrol and measures what happens: high absorption (~70%), then conjugation so rapid that free-resveratrol bioavailability lands below one percent. The paper reframes the field's problem as delivery — exactly the niche where a stable glucoside earns its keep.
Walle T. et al., Drug Metab. Dispos. 32, 1377 (2004) · PMID 15333514
2004–13The Sirtris lesson
David Sinclair co-founds Sirtris Pharmaceuticals around a resveratrol formulation (2004); GSK buys it for $720M (2008); GSK shutters it (2013) without a successful drug development. The field's most expensive reminder that loving the molecule was never the hard part.
Public record — resveratrol overview
2006Prokop et al. — "stable polyphenols"
Accelerated-stability testing concludes resveratrol and its glycon piceid are stable polyphenols — the capped form holds together where handling and shelf-life are concerned.
Prokop J. et al., J. Medicinal Food 9, 11 (2006)
2007Wang et al. — the enzyme that uncaps it
Aspergillus oryzae — the koji mold behind sake and soy sauce — biotransforms knotweed piceid to resveratrol with a potent β-glucosidase. The prodrug logic, demonstrated by a fungus.
Wang H. et al., Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol. 75, 763 (2007) · PMID 17333175
2015–18Cyclodextrins enter the delivery story
Liu et al. characterize the supermolecular structure of a polydatin/maltosyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (2015); Li et al. show β-cyclodextrin inclusion improves trans-polydatin's photostability and antioxidant behavior (2018). The wetting/delivery path for polydatin now has peer-reviewed precedent.

2022–26Polydatin pharmacology matures — preclinically
Comprehensive reviews map polydatin's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cell-pathway research (Molecules, 2022; Cell Biology International, 2026). The honest framing holds: nearly all of it is cell and animal work. Delivery and translation remain the frontier.
2026Panacea Bio Chem — designation HW6
Panacea Bio Chem assigns research designation HW6 to its polydatin formulation programme: HPβCD as wetting aid, water-based processing, measured dispersion behavior. HW6 is a Panacea-internal label — the programme stands on the published record above, and claims nothing beyond it yet.
